In its early decades, the Ryder Cup was a gentlemanly match between the U.S. and golfers from Great Britain and Ireland. But as it evolved with the expansion to Europe, live start-to-finish television coverage, a more heated rivalry and more boisterous fans and a dash of nationalism, the Ryder Cup changed.
