City of Birmingham, Alabama, is eager to raise its profile as host of Olympic and Paralympic events

The 1996 Olympics staged soccer games in Birmingham, Ala. Then came the 2004 Olympic men's marathon trials there, plus NCAA championships in track and field, gymnastics and soccer, along with national-team soccer games and boxing title fights. The city is far from an Olympic hub, but it has big goals. When Gordon Haller crossed the finish line of the very first Ironman triathlon in 1978, he remembers there being about three people there to greet him. Only 15 people entered the race, which had an entry fee of $3. Now, at age 65, Haller is still entering triathlons, as well as long-distance swims, runs and bike races.
