Fifty years ago, Bob Schul won the only gold medal ever by an American in the 5,000 meters to cap a remarkable undefeated 1964 season

In the Olympic 5,000 meters at Tokyo in 1964, American Bob Schul was boxed in at the start of the final lap, then broke outside and surged to the front, picking off the top runners in the world, one by one, to win the gold medal. It's the only gold ever won by a U.S. runner in the event, and the victory capped an amazing season by Schul -- which has long been overlooked.
